EVENT LOCATIONS+DIRECTIONS

LORETTA KELLEY'S HOUSE, 6807 WESTMORELAND AVE, TAKOMA PARK, MD 20912

Host phone for last-minute calls:  301~270~4925.

Parking:  Beware of oddly-placed no-parking sign two houses to left.  Westmoreland's 1-side-only; if full head back toward Carroll but turn left onto Walnut to try the next street, Eastern Ave.

From Takoma Pk Metro Station:  a pleasant 12-minute walk--go 4 blocks east on Carroll and turn right onto Westmoreland.

From the NE:  495 Beltway to NH Ave south, exit 28B.  Drive about 3.5 mi, past Piney Branch and Univ Ave (major intersection).  Right at signal onto Ethan Allen Ave (aka 410/East-West Hwy; U-Haul on corner; if you reach Eastern Ave you missed it).  See shortcut below, or stay on main roads:  Go 1.1 mi on Ethan Allen, then straight past the fire station on left at lighted intersection w/Philadelphia Ave (where 410 turns; now you're on Carroll Ave).  Go to ### below.

From the NW:  495 Beltway to Georgia Ave south (exit 31B, MD 97).  Go south about 2 miles.  When you see a railroad overpass ahead, turn left at light onto Sligo Ave (marked "to 410").  Turn right at 1st light onto Fenton St.  Then left at 1st light onto Philadelphia Ave, aka 410/East-West Hwy.  (Note for mapreaders:  you cannot turn left from Georgia Ave onto Philadelphia Ave.)  Stay on Philadelphia Ave about 1.3 miles to T-intersection where fire station is straight ahead.  Turn right onto Carroll Ave and go to ### below.

From DC:  Travel north on convenient street (such as 16th or 13th).  Get onto Piney Branch Rd.  Pass Georgia Ave, pass Blair Rd.  Turn right on Philadelphia (410/East-West Hwy).  At T-intersection where fire station is straight ahead, turn right onto Carroll Ave.  Go to ### below.

###Heading west on Carroll Ave from the fire station, pass Capital City Cheesecake (formerly Savory Cafe) on left, where road bends gently to right.  Where road bends gently back to left, make sharp downhill left turn onto Westmoreland.  (If you reach Laurel Ave where there's a small clock tower in the middle of the street, you missed it.)  Westmoreland narrows at the end of the 1st long block--keep going straight.  #6807 is 4th house on left in 2nd block.  Yellow house w/turquoise rocker on front porch.

From the East or West:  Get onto 410 (East-West Hwy) and follow directions above.

From Virginia:  Better take the Beltway unless you're very familiar with DC.

Shortcut through neighborhood, from NE starting at NH & 410/E-W:  Go 1 block west on 410/E-W and turn left onto Elm.  Go 6 blocks.  At T-intersection, turn left (still Elm).  Go 1 curvy block and turn left onto Westmoreland (where straight would become Walnut).  4th house on left, yellow house w/turquoise rocker on porch.

LINDA & ROSS' HOUSE, 3600 T St., NW, Wash DC 20007

Host phone for last-minute calls: 202~333~2826.

(Ross sez this may not be quickest/shortest route but is easiest & most foolproof.)   From I-495 (Capital Beltway), take the MD-190/River Rd exit #39, towards Washington.  Keep right at the forks in the exit ramp.  Stay on River Rd to end and turn slight right onto Wisconsin Ave NW.  Go 2 miles, then stay straight to get onto 37^th St. NW.  (Wisconsin bears left where there’s a gas station straight ahead; go to the right of the gas station.)  Then left at 3^rd stop sign onto T St NW.  It’s the last townhouse on right at end of block, white with brown shutters.

SONIA'S HOUSE, 3812 Denfeld Ave (NOT DENFIELD), Kensington, MD 20895

Enthusiastic big dog in residence.

Host phone for last-minute calls:  301~503~7906.

From I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) take the exit 33 N, Connecticut Ave (185).  Stay on 185 for 2.7 mi, through Kensington and where 185 forks left at the intersection with 193.  A few blocks past this fork, turn R onto Denfeld and find #3812 on right.

Alternate route from Beltway:  North on Georgia Ave/97, fork left on Viers Mill/586, left on Univ Blvd/193, right just before Connecticut onto Newport Mill, then in a few blocks where Newport Mill bends go straight onto Denfeld to Sonia’s on left.  (If you miss Newport Mill, just turn right onto Conn, right onto Denfeld, and house is on right.)

From I-270, take Montrose Rd. east which becomes Randolph Rd.  Then right on Viers Mill, right on Connecticut Ave/185, and left on Denfeld to Sonia’s on right.

Or you might prefer other routes from the north side of town near the Beltway, such as Seminary Rd which turns into Capital View, or Univ Blvd/193 from farther away.

METRO:  The closest stops are Wheaton and Grosvenor/Strathmore—Sonia’s between the two arms of the red line.  Most folks would think it's a little too far to walk, but it would be easy for someone to pop over and get you.  Let Sonia know ahead of time, including your ETA, then call Sonia or Jenny (cell 240.344.0066) and we’ll dispatch someone to come get you.  Getting a ride back to Metro afterwards is easy, or maybe even closer to home.

TED HODAPP & LYNN BAUMEISTER'S HOUSE, 6902 Sycamore Ave, Takoma Park, MD  20912 (just a few blocks from Loretta's place)

Cat in residence,

Host phone for last-minute calls:  301~270~1875.

FROM NE BELTWAY:  South on New Hampshire Ave (MD-650).  3.4 mi to right (west) on East-West Hwy.  (See signs for MD-410; local road name in that direction is Ethan Allen).  0.7 mi to left at 1st light onto Sycamore (at Takoma Park-Silver Spring Co-Op health food store).  Last house on right.  (Yes, when coming from the north/west via Beltway, the NH Ave route is usually better traffic-wise than GA Ave or 193 & Carroll.)  Alternative to avoid Takoma Park traffic:  after turning onto E-W/410, take first left onto Elm, then 3rd right onto Sycamore; first house on left.

FROM TAKOMA PARK METRO STATION:  East toward Takoma Park on Cedar, which becomes Carroll after 1st block--this is the main drag through town.  Go 0.7 mi, staying straight onto Ethan Allen where Carroll branches off (after the fire station, where MD-410 comes in).  Next right at the Takoma Park-Silver Spring Co-Op health food store onto Sycamore.  0.3 mi to last house on right.

JENNY FOSTER'S HOUSE/OFFICE, 4532 Old National Pike (Alternate-Rt-40; NOT Rt. 40), Middletown, MD  21769

Cats in residence.

Host phone for last-minute calls:  301~371~4312.

FOUR IMPORTANT NOTES:  (1) Really, you need directions--Mapquest/GPS will get you close but you can't see the house numbers from the road  And you can't see where to turn until it's too late to slow down--the road is busy and on a hill.  (2) The driveway crosses a big ditch, so you need to slow down more than you think to turn in.  (3) Closest I-70 exits are to/from west and east; they're only a mile apart yet on opposite sides of Catoctin Mountain and on different roads (40 and alt-40)--so if you miss your exit, turn around somewhere and switch to the directions from the other direction.  (4) Parking:  Up to 3 cars can park by the house, leaving the turnaround free.  For events, 2 more can go in turnaround, and maybe 3 more parking the first 3 in.  Please use lawn only if it's dry or frozen.  Otherwise use Dogwood lane a block away, or the huge church lot across the street (access via Fern Ln which is across from Dogwood)
.  Parking on shoulder of Alt-40 is NOT recommended.

FROM EAST/SOUTH/NORTH:  Get to Frederick, MD and start west on I-70.  (Watch out for exit-only lanes.)  Take exit 49. Turn left from the ramp onto Alternate Rt. 40
towards Middletown and Braddock Heights.  Go 1.7 miles to driveway on the right.  You'll need a landmark:  During that 1.7 miles from the I-70 interchange to the driveway, you go up over Catoctin mountain and start down.  Where the road straightens out, you will pass Dogwood Lane on the right.  (No, don't turn yet.)  As you pass Dogwood, you should already be signaling a right turn, slowing down, and pulling over to the right--take it easy more than it seems you need to.  (No kidding--road's still downhill and the driveway crosses a big ditch.)  Turn right into the next driveway past Dogwood.  (It's across the street from the uphill end of a big church parking lot.)

FROM THE WEST:  Easiest route is to take I-70 almost to Frederick and get off at exit 48 onto Rt. 40 (one of the many places where 70 & 40 cross).  You will be heading east toward Frederick on 40; you need to pop over to Alt-40 and head west back over the mountain.  Take 3rd right onto Old Camp Rd (just after a Bob Evans; NOT 1st right onto Blentlinger your GPS might tell you to take), then right at T onto Alternate-Rt-40.  In 2 or 3 miles, pass the other I-70 interchange and follow directions above.

ALTERNATE ROUTE FROM THE WEST (the one I take):  Get off of I-70 onto 40 at exit 32A on the E side of Hagerstown (one of the places where 70 & 40 cross).  Go east 13.5 miles and look sharp to find the 2nd road to R which is marked Hollow Rd--actually you turn onto this and then immediately left onto Hollow Rd.  (Why the 2nd Hollow Rd?  Because the 1st is where it T's into 40.  Hollow wanders around and comes back very close to 40; there the 2nd "Hollow Rd" is actually a short connector.)  OK, after taking that immediate left follow Hollow Rd 2.2 mi to the traffic light at High's/gas stations; turn left onto Alt-40 and follow dirs from Middletown.  If you miss Hollow, you can turn R on Ridge Rd (near Gambrill State Park) and go a few miles south along the ridge (30 mph--speed trap!), then R at the light at Alt-40 and down hill a little ways westbound to my house--see dirs from E/S/N above.  Or if you really miss things you'll go over the mountain and pass the I-70 exit; follow regular dirs from W above.

LOCAL:  I'm on Alt-40, coming down the hill from Braddock into the Middletown Valley.  Near the big Methodist church, in the Fountaindale neighborhood, yet on the main road.

F
ROM THE "GOLDEN MILE" (Rt. 40 west of Rt. 15):  Stay to left as you head west on 40 and take the left fork for ALT-40.  Go 2-3 miles, pass the I-70 interchange, and follow dirs from E/S/N above.
FROM MIDDLETOWN:  Head east on Alt-40 toward Braddock Heights and Frederick.  East of town you'll pass 2 lights:  at the Safeway shopping center and at the High's/gas stations.  Then go 0.7 mi to house on left.  Watch for a large church on the right; my driveway is on left across from the far (uphill) end of their parking lot.  It's just before Dogwood/Fern intersection and the uphill curves beyond.  It's safer to use what will be the left turn lane for Dogwood a little beyond, even though it's not legal yet according to the lines.
FROM EAST HAGERSTOWN, NORTH MYERSVILLE, OR SMITHSBURG: Take Rt. 40 east to Hollow Rd--see alt route from W above.

DEB WEINREICH'S HOUSE, 6212 Twenty Year Chase, Columbia, MD 21045

Cat in residence.

Phones in case you have trouble finding it:  H410~953~0030, C410~375~3789

FROM 495 IN EITHER DIRECTION:  Take 95 North to Route 175.  When you exit, stay in the left lane of the ramp to go west toward Columbia.  There are two traffic lights which come up quickly after the exit; proceed straight through those.  Get into the 3rd lane from the right as you approach the next light, which is at the major intersection with Route 108--you want to go straight instead of splitting off to Columbia Gateway Drive with the two right hand lanes.  Then take the first exit AFTER that split, towards Snowden River Parkway (North).  Turn right from that ramp onto Snowden River Parkway.  Then take the first right onto Dried Earth (Blvd or Rd?).  Go one block and take the first left onto April Brook Way.  Then take the 4th right onto Twenty Year Chase.  4th house on right, #6212.

FROM POINTS NORTH OF COLUMBIA:  Take 95 South, then Route 100 West toward Ellicott City.  Take the exit for Snowden River Parkway.  There's a weird traffic circle at the exit; go 3/4 of the way around (which is like a left turn) onto Snowden River Pkwy.  Continue south on Snowden River Pkwy through about 3 traffic lights.  After going through the light at Tamar Drive, take the 2nd left onto April Brook Circle.  Then 4th left onto Twenty Year Chase.  4th house on right, #6212.

FROM WEST/NORTH/I-70:  Take I-70 to Route 29 South.  Get in left lane to exit soon onto Route 100 East toward Columbia.  Take normal right-lane exit for Snowden River Parkway South.  Continue south on Snowden River Pkwy through about 3 traffic lights.  After going through the light at Tamar Drive, take the 2nd left onto April Brook Circle.  Then 4th left onto Twenty Year Chase.  4th house on right, #6212.
